Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing

Multi-modal Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) is being developed to monitor strain, temperature and observing AE signals from damage and impact in such structures  as submarines, surface ships and aircraft.  Advantages of DFOS include:

  • Small footprint
  • Global inspection system
  • No electromagnetic interference
  • Unattended operation
  • Could be used in harsh environments
  • Large areas could be inspected rapidly
